IDEA’S FOR FINAL YEAR PROJECT: (Idea’s researched further are in bold to see practicality of choosing project to work with)
Explaining the effects of ‘Brexit’ to a younger audience in an educational based manner – could be used in a ‘historical histories’ style and in schools as part of a programme or instalment of educational based programmes.
Being a Carer – A Mothers perspective between my own Nan and my Uncle; what happens when a child never leaves the nest, impact of government funding and how they both cope with disability.
Alcohol – Explaining the effects of Alcohol to under 18’s and how to deal with peer pressure, why there isn’t an ‘addictive’ label on alcohol but there are warnings on Tobacco and high sugary foods.
Anxiety in young children – Referring to my sister and offering an educational perspective on how to cope with it, how parent’s can find a coping mechanism and how school systems react and help with Anxiety.
‘Do Schools Kill or Capture creativity?’ Exploring the cuts in funding and the focus on vocational paths rather than a creative path?
Technology – Is the evolution of Technology having an impact on education? i.e Physical Education, basic reading and writing skills and how we communicate with each other.
Healthy Eating – ‘Are the giants making us giant?’ Supermarkets not promoting healthy eating, is it cheaper to buy high sugary foods rather than healthy options. Companies such as Coca-Cola have more buying power to promote them with ease, whereas local produce (farmers etc) don’t have the buying ability to promote naturally sourced products.
‘Let Girls Learn’ – Poorer countries who focus on the household duties of young women whilst diminishing their right to an education.
Single Parenting children – Exploring whether being a single parent and trying to raise a child without a Mother or a Father has an irreversible effect on young children in regards to education, lifestyle and health.
‘Spark Inside’ – Producing an Animation to promote the charity about young 15-25 year olds in prison and how they reform their life using the Hero’s Journey.
Possible Two Options:
Being a Carer:
Linear Documentary/Experimental focusing on the life of a mother who’s son didn’t grow up/leave home
Would be able to get clear sound recordings in the studio for Documentary with sources who aren’t scripted i.e Margaret
Could potentially interact well with ‘Extension’ module if it was completed with Character Design in mind
One Male/One Female Character in the Documentary
‘Spark Inside’:
Life Coaching Programme with a mythologists view; Joseph Campbell
1-2-1 Coaching in prison with a systemic view of no judgement
3 Part Programme consists of 3, 2-hour sessions with an Introduction, Deeper Exploration and Crossing the threshold
Learn about the values, opt in for a 1-2-1 session with a deeper, more focused perspective
Hero’s Journey consists of 7 steps:
Ordinary world; The world that you are born into, made up of geographical elements, beliefs, culture, gender, society with a comfort zone expansion
Call to Adventure/Refusal of the Call; Something that encourages you to leave ‘push or pull’. With an option of refusing the call completely.
Cross the Threshold; Refers to the decision making step, if you are ready to leave your comfort zone and make a mental decision/action
Tests, Fears, Enemies and Allies; Also known as the ‘Learning Step’, you find out what is in the unknown world, see who your enemies and allies are (internal allies
Ordeal, death and rebirth; Using a butterfly metaphor.
Claiming the reward; Finally beginning to get your own piece of mind
Returning with Gifts; Coming from the unknown world back into your own ordinary world as who you are now, not before
The proposal from their perspective would be;
Explain the purpose/impact of the ‘hero’s journey in an accessible way
What should they feel?
Understand how the charity works from an inside perspective
Wanted the Animation to re-invent the brand
3 people; 3 case studies
The Target audience:
Investors
Fundraisers
People who don’t know what Spark Inside is
How long for the Animation?
3 Minutes of 4,320 rotoscoped frames at 24fps
3 studies of separate people
Other notes:
They would like the Animation to be scripted
Ideally finished before March 2017
Don’t want to show any of the prisoners, only case studies to focus on the CEO of the Company and the coaches to help position their brand
Sound quality would be recorded from their end and then sent over to me to work with?
What they want has already been done by ‘Ted Talks’ (Matthew Wrinkler – What makes a Hero?)
Final Idea for Documentary:
Final Idea for Documentary: The final idea I have chosen for my documentary was the 'Being a Carer' Documentary. I feel this is an issue close to my heart and I would be able to present the Documentary from the perspective of those surrounding a Carer and how they feel from an outsiders perspective and also from a political stance.
Visual Style: The colour scheme for the Documentary revolves around harmonious colours to give a sense of familiarity to the film. I want this to be a theme within the Documentary because it is a family matter for myself and I want the audience to watch it and understand the kind hearted nature of my Nan.
From the image below, the colours towards the top of the moodboard are intended to be used for the family-characters within the Documentary. This is a stylistic element I have chosen because I want the 'vintage' style colours to be used during the flashbacks to the 1950's and 1960's when my Uncle was first born.
Style of the Documentary:
The style for the Documentary will be cut-out animation, rotoscopes, under the camera and pixilation. I want the Government to be produced using the techniques at the bottom of the mood board; this is because I don't want them to have an identity. I want them to be faceless, as research suggests that in the majority of cases when the government contacts a family or respite centre it's usually a protocol and is the same for everyone. Therefore, I don't feel as though adding a face to the government will be of any purpose throughout the documentary.
The top half of the mood board will represent the cut-out characters of my Nan, Joey and other family members. These are all styles I really enjoy the aesthetic off. The crumpled paper adds an old-fashioned theme to the images and it's an element I would like to incorporate into my own Documentary so that the audience will have a better understanding of the time-period and it will hold some relevance when the flashbacks begin.
Timelines: The next element within pre-production was to establish the timeline of the Documentary - to do this, I decided to include the timeline of my Nan and Joey's life as this is what is going to be followed throughout.
